A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
