British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
