The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
